Supreme Court to Rule whether California has to release Inmates

23 Jun 2010

U.S. Supreme Court to decide on Califoria prisoner release mandate in fall.

Last year, a special judicial panel ruled that overcrowding in California's prisons was causing inmates to be denied adequate medical care. To rectify this, the panel ordered the state to cap the prison population at 137% (!?) of capacity. In order to do this, California would need to release approximately 46,000 inmates over the next two years. Despite his own plans for prison reform, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appealed the ruling. Today, The Supreme Court has announced that they will hear the case this fall, effectively delaying the court order.
