Attorney Douglas Williams
Attorney Douglas Williams graduated in the top ten percent of his law school class, earning membership in the prestigious Order of the Coif. During his final year of law school, Doug clerked for Judge Padovano of the Florida First District Court of Appeal, gaining valuable legal experience in appellate law. Upon graduating, Doug accepted a position at a premier maritime litigation firm in Tampa, Florida, known as one of the top firms in the Southeast. There, he handled a variety of commercial disputes, including charter party actions, maritime lien enforcement, vessel attachments, and arrests. However, his primary focus was defending casualty lawsuits, representing shipowners and maritime companies in complex litigation.
Doug’s work frequently took him to ports along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, where he conducted on-site investigations of maritime accidents on behalf of shipowners. During his time in Tampa, Doug authored a published opinion on the enforceability of venue provisions in seamen’s employment contracts in U.S. United Barge Lines v. Hagan. Additionally, he worked on Atlantic Sounding Co. v. Townsend, a landmark case that reached the United States Supreme Court. This case provided injured seamen with the ability to seek punitive damages when shipowners willfully and wantonly disregard their maintenance and cure obligations, marking a significant victory for maritime workers’ rights. In 2011, Doug and his wife relocated to Washington state, where he joined a maritime firm in downtown Seattle.
