12-Year-Old Girl Accused of Smothering 8-Year-Old Cousin Over an iPhone

A 12-year-old girl in Tennessee has been charged with murder after allegedly smothering her 8-year-old cousin in a dispute over an iPhone. The tragic incident occurred on July 15 in Humboldt, Tennessee, and was captured on a security camera.

Incident Details

According to Gibson District Attorney Frederick Agee, the security camera footage shows the older child using bedding to suffocate her cousin as she slept on the top bunk. After the younger girl died, the 12-year-old reportedly cleaned up the victim and repositioned her body.

Argument Over an iPhone

A relative informed  that the girls had been arguing over an iPhone. The children were visiting their grandmother from out of town at the time of the incident.

Charges and Evidence

Authorities charged the 12-year-old with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence after reviewing the video on Wednesday. District Attorney Agee described the act as one of the most disturbing cases his office has prosecuted.

Potential Adult Court Trial

Agee plans to petition for the girl, who will turn 13 later this month, to be tried in adult court. This move could result in a lengthier sentence, whether through incarceration or court-ordered supervision.
