Authorities Investigate Motive in Lauderdale Lakes Homicide
A Broward County Sheriff’s Office news release announced the arrest of a 14-year-old girl on Tuesday in connection with the death of her grandmother.
Unresponsive Grandmother Found, Medical Examiner Rules Homicide
Deputies and emergency responders arrived at a Lauderdale Lakes apartment early Thursday morning after receiving a call regarding an unresponsive woman. The victim, identified as 79-year-old Yevheniia Koval, was found with bruises and transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy by the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be homicide.
Granddaughter Identified as Suspect, Details Remain Unclear
The victim’s son, who had left her with his teenage daughter while visiting a friend, informed investigators upon his return. Following their investigation, detectives identified the granddaughter as a suspect in Ms. Koval’s death. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the killing.
Second-Degree Murder Charge, Trial Status Uncertain
The teenager faces a second-degree murder charge. It remains unclear whether she will be tried as a juvenile or an adult. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation.
