88-Year-Old Getaway Driver Receives Prison Sentence in Montana Bank Robberies

Billings Man Faces Two Years Behind Bars

An 88-year-old Montana resident was sentenced Thursday to two years in federal prison for his role as the getaway driver in a pair of bank robberies that took place last summer in Billings, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Montana.

Guilty Plea Leads to Prison Time

The unnamed man pleaded guilty in February to two counts of bank robbery. As part of the sentencing, he was also ordered to pay nearly $3,100 in restitution to the banks and will be subject to three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.

Medical Facility to House Elderly Defendant

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Watters presided over the sentencing and directed the man to report to the U.S. Marshals Service. He will then be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons medical facility to serve his sentence.

Repeat Offender Caught After Second Robbery

Prosecutors revealed that the man and his accomplice were apprehended following the second robbery in August 2023. The vehicle they were driving matched the description of the car used in the first bank robbery, which occurred just four days prior. Investigators also disclosed that the defendant admitted to proposing the robberies as a means to acquire money, referencing a similar crime he committed in the past. Public records confirm a previous bank robbery conviction for the defendant in 2008, when he was 72 years old.
