Afghan Man in Oklahoma City Arrested for Plotting Election Day Attack

Arrest Linked to Islamic State

An Afghan man residing in Oklahoma City has been arrested for allegedly plotting a “terrorist attack” on Election Day, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice. Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, entered the United States in 2021 on a special immigrant visa.

Background of the Suspect

The special immigrant visa program is designed for individuals who have collaborated with U.S. armed forces in Iraq or Afghanistan, typically as translators or interpreters. However, the indictment did not clarify whether Tawhedi had served in such a capacity. The Department of Justice has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this detail.

Details of the Alleged Plot

Investigators revealed that Tawhedi conducted online searches to obtain information about accessing security cameras in Washington, D.C., as well as finding states that do not require a firearms license. Notably, he reportedly visited web cameras for the White House and Washington Monument.

FBI Intervenes Before Attack

Tawhedi was arrested alongside an underage co-conspirator, identified as his brother-in-law, after meeting with FBI informants to purchase two AK-47 rifles and ammunition. During his post-arrest interrogation, Tawhedi expressed intentions to target large gatherings, indicating a desire to die as martyrs in the process.

Ongoing Threats to National Security

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the government’s commitment to combating threats posed by ISIS and other extremist groups. “We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security,” he stated.
