Arizona Man Sentenced to Nearly 2 Years in Grand Canyon Arson Case

Dahntay Dunbar Ordered to Pay Restitution and Serve Supervised Release

A 21-year-old Arizona man has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for his role in an arson case at Grand Canyon National Park, federal authorities announced Tuesday. Dahntay Dunbar, of Flagstaff, will also serve five years of supervised release and has been ordered to pay over $20,000 in restitution for damages caused by the fire.

Arson at Ex-Girlfriend’s Park Cabin

The incident occurred when Dunbar forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s locked cabin at the park in May. According to prosecutors, Dunbar entered the cabin while she was away, poured liquor on her bed, set her shirt on fire, and placed it on the bed, causing a fire to ignite.

Quick Action by Bystander Minimizes Damage

Before authorities arrived, a bystander managed to put out most of the fire. Despite this, the cabin suffered significant smoke and fire damage, with its walls and ceiling affected by the flames. National Park Service rangers later apprehended Dunbar, who confessed to the arson.

Confession and Guilty Plea

In July, Dunbar pleaded guilty to arson of a dwelling in federal court. During sentencing in a U.S. District Court in Phoenix, the judge sentenced Dunbar to prison time along with five years of supervised release as part of his punishment.
