Deadly Knife Attack at Nebraska Rest Area Leaves One Dead, Another Injured

Couple Assaulted During Attempted Robbery

A violent attack at an Interstate 80 rest area in Nebraska on Wednesday morning resulted in a tragic loss of life and a critical injury.

Victims Identified

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene shortly after 7:00 am and discovered a married couple suffering from knife wounds. The victims, identified as 72-year-old Gary Weaver and 71-year-old Mary Weaver of Eureka, Missouri, were traveling through Nebraska in their mobile home when the assault occurred.

Husband Succumbs to Injuries

Sadly, Gary Weaver succumbed to his injuries at a Grand Island hospital. Mary Weaver remained in critical condition at the time of the report.

Suspect Apprehended After Chase

Authorities report that the suspect fled the rest area in a vehicle before their arrival. However, Grand Island Police were able to obtain a description of the vehicle. A Nebraska State Patrol unit located a matching vehicle near Wood River and initiated a pursuit. The chase reached speeds of up to 120 mph before the suspect exited the interstate and ultimately drove the vehicle into the Platte River.

Apprehension and Charges

With the aid of a police K-9 unit, troopers were able to apprehend the suspect approximately 30 minutes later. James Thompson Jr., 22, of Elyria, Ohio, is currently being held in the Hall County Jail facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, and fleeing from law enforcement.
