Yvonne Wu Faces Prison Time for Killing Girlfriend’s Friend
New York, NY – A former New York City police officer involved in a deadly 2021 shooting has admitted guilt to manslaughter and attempted murder, according to an announcement by New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday.
Off-Duty Officer Shoots Two Women
Yvonne Wu, 34, was off-duty on October 13th, 2021, when she opened fire inside a Brooklyn apartment, killing Jamie Liang and injuring Jenny Li. Authorities revealed Wu was in a relationship with Li and had been waiting for her in the apartment when Li arrived with Liang.
Initial Charges and Jurisdiction Shift
Wu initially pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges. However, the investigation was later transferred to the Attorney General’s office due to Wu’s status as a police officer.
Guilty Plea and Expected Sentence
Wu has been in jail since the shooting and will remain in custody until her sentencing on August 28th. As part of the plea deal, she is expected to receive a 22-year prison sentence for manslaughter and a concurrent 5-year sentence for attempted murder.
