A former tax assessor and collector in north Mississippi has been charged with embezzling more than $300,000 from the Benton County Tax Collector’s office, according to state Auditor Shad White.
Allegations of Embezzlement
Shannon Wilburn, who served as the tax assessor and collector, is accused of diverting substantial funds intended for the county and using them for personal expenses. State Auditor Shad White announced the charges on Tuesday, stating that Wilburn’s actions were a breach of public trust and an abuse of his official position.
Resignation and Potential Penalties
Wilburn resigned from his position in April, prior to the charges being filed. If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including up to $5,000 in fines and a maximum of 20 years in prison.
State Auditor’s Office Response
Auditor White emphasized the ongoing efforts of his office to work closely with prosecutors to ensure accountability in cases of public corruption. “The dedicated team at the State Auditor’s Office will continue to work closely with prosecutors to get record results, one case at a time,” White said in a statement.
Financial Protections for Taxpayers
Wilburn’s position as an elected official in Benton County was covered by a $200,000 surety bond, which is intended to protect taxpayers from financial losses due to corruption. Additionally, Benton County has an insurance policy that covers theft, potentially mitigating the financial impact of the alleged embezzlement on the county.
