Incident on Independence Day
A New York man has been charged with arson after providing fireworks to an 11-year-old child, leading to a fire that damaged two homes on Independence Day. The Nassau County Police Department on Long Island reported that Karamjit Singh, 33, instructed the child to ignite the fireworks outside his home in Levittown on Thursday morning.
Fireworks Malfunction and Resulting Blaze
The fireworks malfunctioned, setting a shed on fire. The blaze quickly spread to Singh’s home and a neighboring house, causing extensive damage. Local media captured images showing thick smoke billowing from the fire and one home’s side burned away, revealing its wooden studs. Charred debris littered the yard.
Arrest and Charges
No injuries were reported. Singh was arrested without incident, and the child was released to a family member, according to police. Singh faces multiple charges, including arson, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. He is being represented by the Nassau County legal aid office.
Legal Proceedings
Court records show that Singh is being represented by the Nassau County legal aid office. A message seeking comment from the office was left on Sunday. Singh’s charges stem from the reckless endangerment and significant property damage caused by the fireworks incident.
