Memphis Woman Arrested After Her 6-Year-Old Son Brings Gun to School

Memphis police have arrested a 22-year-old woman after her 6-year-old son brought a stolen gun to school, prompting charges of child neglect and endangerment, as well as carrying a weapon on school property.

Incident at Geeter K-8 School

The arrest came after Memphis police responded to a call from Geeter K-8 School on Thursday, where a 6-year-old student had reportedly brought a Ruger 9mm handgun to school. According to the school’s resource officer, the boy was showing the gun to classmates before a staff member found it in his backpack and confiscated it.

Gun Reported as Stolen

Upon investigation, officers discovered that the handgun had been reported stolen. Court documents indicate that the boy’s mother told police she had purchased the gun from “an unknown person,” raising additional concerns about the origins of the firearm.

Charges Filed Against the Mother

The 22-year-old woman now faces multiple charges, including carrying a weapon on school property and child neglect or endangerment. She was booked into Shelby County jail and later released without bond. She was expected to appear in court on Friday.

Broader Context of Gun Safety Concerns

This incident occurred the same week a Georgia father was arrested and charged in connection with a shooting at a high school, where his 14-year-old son was accused of killing four people. The father, Colin Gray, allegedly provided the firearm to his son, despite knowing he posed a threat to himself and others.
