Migrants Rescued from Grueling Smuggling Operation in Texas

Overheated Migrants Found in Trailer Compartment, Seven Arrested

San Antonio, Texas – A sting operation targeting human smuggling led to the rescue of eleven migrants and the arrest of seven suspects on Thursday. The migrants were discovered crammed into a sweltering trailer compartment with little water.

Acting on a Tip, Authorities Locate Trailer

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar reported that authorities received a tip regarding a smuggling operation. Following this lead, they tracked a trailer being towed to a rural residence outside San Antonio.

Dire Conditions Found at Residence

Upon arrival at the residence, described by Sheriff Salazar as a “shack” with significant disrepair, authorities discovered a total of 26 migrants. The migrants had endured harsh conditions, including the scorching Texas heat, while confined within the trailer’s hidden compartment for three hours. Eleven migrants required hospitalization for heat-related illnesses and minor injuries.

Details Regarding Rescued Migrants

Sheriff Salazar confirmed that all rescued migrants appeared to be adults. While their nationalities are not yet fully established, one woman identified herself as Guatemalan and revealed she paid $16,000 for passage to the United States. The Sheriff estimates the migrants were transported from Laredo, roughly 160 miles away.

Blaming Cartels and Reassuring Apprehension

Sheriff Salazar attributed Thursday’s smuggling operation to Mexican cartels. Authorities discovered bulletproof vests and rifles on the property, further suggesting cartel involvement. While some individuals initially attempted to flee the scene, Sheriff Salazar believes all those involved were apprehended.
