Mississippi Man Charged with Stealing Car That Had a Baby Inside; Baby Found Safe

Bond Set at $300,000

A Mississippi judge set bond at $300,000 on Tuesday for James Wilson, a 44-year-old man accused of stealing a car with a 7-month-old baby inside. Wilson, from Rankin County, was arrested on Monday at a hotel in Jackson and charged with auto theft and kidnapping.

Incident Details

The incident occurred Saturday evening when a Mazda sedan, left unattended with its engine running, was stolen from a gas station near Interstate 55 in north Jackson. Police found the car that night at a shopping center a few miles away, with the baby unharmed inside. The infant received a medical check as a precaution.

Wilson’s Denial and Legal History

Wilson has denied stealing the car, according to statements made to news outlets on Monday. Police noted that he is currently on probation for previous auto theft convictions.

Evidence and Testimony

During a court hearing on Tuesday, a detective testified that video footage showed Wilson near the gas station and later parking the car in the Fondren neighborhood before walking away. These pieces of evidence were crucial in linking Wilson to the crime.

Potential Charges Against the Mother

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade indicated that officers would consult with Child Protection Services and the Hinds County district attorney to determine if any charges should be brought against the baby’s mother. Chief Wade emphasized the importance of not leaving children unattended in running vehicles, stating, “You cannot replace that baby.”
