Mississippi Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing Social Security Funds Intended for Seniors

Defendant Faces Potential Prison Time and Fines

A woman from Mississippi has pleaded guilty to federal charges of theft, admitting that she diverted over $25,000 in Social Security benefits intended for two elderly recipients. Taruars Santae Grace, 46, from Meridian, accepted responsibility for stealing $25,364 in Social Security Administration (SSA) retirement benefits, according to federal prosecutors.

Admissions of Unauthorized Access and Use of Benefits

Court documents reveal that Grace knowingly diverted Social Security payments into bank accounts under her control, using the funds for personal expenses. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi confirmed in a news release that Grace was aware she was not entitled to the funds but continued to use the benefits for her own purposes.

Indictment and Plea Agreement

In August, Grace was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of theft of government funds. During her court appearance on Wednesday, she entered a guilty plea, formally admitting to the allegations.

Upcoming Sentencing

Grace’s sentencing is scheduled for February 11, 2025, where she faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, as well as a possible fine of up to $250,000. The case highlights the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting cases of benefit fraud, which can have a significant impact on vulnerable populations.
