Argument Over Video Game Volume Leads to Tragedy

A New Hampshire man has been sentenced to a significant prison term for the brutal killing of his mother. The motive behind the crime: a seemingly trivial argument over video game volume.

40 Years to Life for Thomas Humphrey

47-year-old Thomas Humphrey received a sentence of 40 years to life in prison on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and arson charges stemming from the November 2023 death of his mother, 70-year-old Linda Tufts, inside their Goffstown residence.

Judge Cites Crime’s Severity

During sentencing, Judge William Delker emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “The brutality of this crime simply makes it too dangerous not to impose a very lengthy state prison sentence.”

Argument Over Birthday Gift

Prosecutors revealed details of the argument that sparked the tragedy. Humphrey, who reportedly resided in the home’s basement, argued with his mother regarding the volume of video games he was playing. This argument unfolded shortly after Linda Tufts gifted him a PlayStation for his birthday.

Fatal Altercation and Aftermath

According to authorities, the argument escalated to violence. Humphrey stabbed his mother multiple times before setting her body on fire. Police arriving at the scene discovered Humphrey at the bottom of the basement stairs, self-inflicted wounds present, and still in possession of the murder weapon.
