Police Announce Additional Arrests in Ellis Square Incident
Savannah Police announced the arrest of three additional suspects on Friday in connection with the May 18th shooting that injured 11 people in Ellis Square. This brings the total number of people charged in the incident to four.
Nighttime Argument Sparks Gunfire in Popular Tourist District
Police Chief Lenny Gunther previously explained that a late-night argument between two women escalated into an exchange of gunfire involving multiple shooters. The public square, located amidst restaurants and bars, is a popular night time destination for tourists. Thankfully, there were no fatalities reported, though ten individuals sustained gunshot wounds and another person was injured by shattered glass. All victims received treatment at a local hospital and were later released.
New Arrests and Charges
The latest press release identified the newly arrested suspects as Samira Kenny (29), Jordan Caleb Jones (20), and Cazare Cooper (19). All three face charges of aggravated assault – five counts for Kenny and four each for Jones and Cooper. Additionally, they are charged with possessing a weapon during a crime.
Court records for Cooper reveal a pending felony case involving theft, drug possession, and a separate gun charge. He was previously released on bond in January 2023.
Previous Arrest
A fourth suspect, William Anthony Mitchell (20), was arrested last week on charges related to the shooting, including aggravated assault and firearm possession during a crime. Mitchell also faces unrelated drug trafficking charges.
