South Carolina Man Admits Killing Virginia Police Officer: First-Degree Murder Plea

Resolution Reached in 2021 Shooting Death of Big Stone Gap Officer

Michael Donivan White, 36, of South Carolina, pleaded guilty on Thursday to first-degree murder in Wise County Circuit Court. This amended charge stems from the fatal shooting of Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler in November 2021.

Officer Killed Responding to Call, Suspect Apprehended in Tennessee

Officer Chandler, 29, was fatally shot while responding to a call near Big Stone Gap on November 13th, 2021. He succumbed to his wounds later that evening. Following the incident, authorities apprehended White in Tennessee.

Original Charges Amended in Plea Deal

White was initially facing multiple charges, including aggravated murder of a police officer and felony murder. A plea agreement was reached, with White pleading guilty to first-degree murder in exchange for a reduced sentence recommendation of 40 to 100 years, rather than a potential life sentence.

This plea deal received approval from both Officer Chandler’s family, including his widow, and the Big Stone Gap Police Chief.

Federal Charges and Sentencing to Follow

Federal and state prosecutors are collaborating on a similar plea agreement for the federal charges White faces in connection with Officer Chandler’s death.

White’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 21st.
