“Treadmill Abuse” Murder Trial: Prosecution and Defense Clash Over Cause of Death

New Jersey Father Faces Charges in Son’s Death

The trial of a New Jersey man accused of murdering his 6-year-old son began this week, with opposing views emerging from the prosecution and defense regarding the cause of the child’s death.

Prosecution Argues for Blunt Force Trauma

Prosecutors in Ocean County allege that Corey Micciolo died from blunt force trauma sustained during a forced treadmill exercise session in March 2021. The incident was captured on surveillance video, showing Christopher Gregor, 31, the boy’s father, repeatedly increasing the treadmill speed, leading to Corey falling multiple times.

Defense Disputes Cause of Death

Defense attorney Mario Gallucci argues that Corey’s death resulted from complications of pneumonia and sepsis. He acknowledges the graphic nature of the treadmill video but maintains it’s irrelevant to the cause of death, which occurred approximately two weeks after the incident.

Physical Evidence Presented

Prosecutors introduced evidence of widespread contusions on Corey’s body, along with lacerations to his heart and liver. The defense countered by attributing the bruises to both the treadmill and Corey’s participation in football.

Trial Continues

Witness testimony is ongoing, with the trial expected to resume next Tuesday. In addition to the murder charge, Gregor faces a separate charge of child endangerment stemming from the treadmill incident.
