A small South Dakota town is reeling after a shooting that left three people dead. A former mayor, Jay Ostrem, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.

Victims Identified, Ostrem Held on High Bond

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley confirmed the deaths of three individuals. A probable cause affidavit identified them as two brothers, aged 26 and 21, and a 35-year-old man. Ostrem, 64, is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.

Former Lawman and Mayor, Motive Unclear

Media reports reveal Ostrem’s background in law enforcement, spanning over two decades in Wyoming and South Dakota. He also served as mayor of Centerville approximately 15 years ago. Authorities haven’t yet disclosed a clear motive for the shooting.

According to court documents, Ostrem was apprehended shortly after the incident. Officers found an AR-style rifle next to him and a handgun in his possession. A search of the reported shooting location revealed the bodies of all three victims.

Wife’s Allegations, Cause for Action Investigated

The affidavit details Ostrem’s wife claiming a sexual assault by a neighbor named Paul on Thursday. She reportedly informed Ostrem of the assault on Monday night, leading him to become enraged and leave their home. Authorities are investigating the connection between these allegations and the shooting.
