Families of Victims Receive Compensation, Independent Report Release Sought
The University of Virginia (UVA) has agreed to pay $9 million in a settlement related to a deadly 2022 campus shooting, according to a lawyer representing some of the victims’ families.
Shooting Took Lives of Three Football Players, Injured Two Others
The November 2022 shooting tragically claimed the lives of three football players: D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler, and Lavel Davis Jr. Two additional students, Mike Hollins (another football team member) and Marlee Morgan, were also wounded in the attack.
Settlement Reached, Families Seek Transparency
While the settlement provides some financial compensation, some families are calling for further action. Attorney Kimberly Wald, representing several victims’ families, emphasizes the need for immediate release of an independent investigation completed last year. This probe focused on the university’s handling of the alleged shooter, including threat assessments and potential preventative measures. Wald contends the university should have removed the student before the shooting due to prior demonstrations of erratic and unstable behavior.
Compensation Breakdown
The settlement details financial compensation for the affected families. The university will pay the maximum allowable amount under Virginia law – $2 million each – to the families of the three deceased students. The two injured students, Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan, will receive a combined total of $3 million.
Settlement Approved by Court
Negotiated outside of court and not involving a lawsuit, the final settlement required approval by a judge. The Albemarle County Circuit Court judge accepted the agreement on Friday afternoon.
