Suspect Pleads Not Guilty
Darren Martell, 23, of St. Albans, Vermont, pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder charges on Friday in the death of his 82-year-old neighbor, Roberta Martin. Martell appeared in court after being charged at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, where he was already held on an unrelated charge.
Discovery of the Victim
Roberta Martin was reported missing earlier this month after her daughter requested that neighbors check on her. Vermont State Police found signs of a break-in at her home in Enosburg, prompting a search that led to the discovery of her remains on July 21.
Community Impact
Franklin County State’s Attorney Bram Kranichfeld described the incident as a “terrible tragedy for our community,” reflecting the shock and grief felt by local residents.
Living Situation and Previous Arrest
Martell had been living with residents in a home next door to Martin’s in Enosburg. At the time of the murder charge, he was already incarcerated for lewd and lascivious misconduct on an unrelated charge.
Current Status
Martell remains at the Northwest State Correctional Facility. As of Saturday, it was unclear if he had legal representation.
