15-Year-Old Charged With Murder in July Shooting of Chicago Mail Carrier

Teen Arrested in Iowa, Charged in Connection With Fatal Shooting

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with murder in the July 2023 shooting death of Chicago mail carrier Octavia Redmond, police announced on Tuesday. Redmond, 48, was gunned down on her mail route on Chicago’s South Side, marking a tragic and senseless attack.

The Chicago Police Department, in cooperation with U.S. Marshals, apprehended the teenager on Monday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was arrested on a murder warrant. He has since been extradited to Chicago and charged as a juvenile with first-degree murder.

The Deadly Shooting

The U.S. Postal Service reported that Redmond was shot multiple times at close range on July 19 by a juvenile who emerged from a stolen SUV, approached her on her route, and then fled the scene in the same vehicle. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Redmond tragically died from her injuries.

Teen Identified Through Camera Footage

Police said they were able to identify the suspect by analyzing footage from police and private surveillance cameras, which tracked the juvenile’s movements before and after the shooting. An anonymous tip further helped investigators confirm the teenager’s identity.

The Chicago Police Department announced they are continuing to search for additional offenders involved in the crime.

Court Appearance and Further Investigation

The teenager made his first appearance in juvenile court on Tuesday, where he was ordered to remain in custody. His next court date is set for November 1. As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet revealed whether the teen has retained legal representation.

Postal Service Offers Reward for Additional Information

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any remaining suspects. In a statement, Ruth Mendonca, inspector in charge of the Postal Service’s Chicago division, emphasized the agency’s commitment to justice.

“When members of our postal family are targeted, postal inspectors will not rest until justice is delivered on behalf of the victims, their families, and our postal community,” Mendonca said. “This arrest is the first step in securing justice for Mrs. Redmond. We hope this brings the Redmond family some semblance of relief.”
