Death Warrant Signed for James Ford
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a death warrant for James Ford, a man convicted of murdering a couple nearly three decades ago. Ford is scheduled to be executed on February 13, 2025, at Florida State Prison, making it the state’s first execution of the year.
Horrific 1997 Murders of Greg and Kimberly Malnory
Ford was sentenced to death for the brutal killings of Greg and Kimberly Malnory, whose bodies were discovered on April 7, 1997, at the South Florida Sod Farm in Charlotte County.
According to court records, the couple had been bludgeoned and shot, with both suffering multiple head injuries. Kimberly Malnory was also raped. Her body was found near the couple’s truck, where their 22-month-old baby was left for over 18 hours, exposed to the elements and covered in her mother’s blood.
Ford was convicted of multiple charges, including sexual battery and child abuse.
Florida’s Execution Record Under DeSantis
Ford’s execution will mark Florida’s first in 2025 and the second under DeSantis in two years. The state carried out one execution in 2024, a significant decrease from the six executions in 2023 when DeSantis was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.
During the first three years of his administration, DeSantis did not approve any executions, a marked contrast to recent activity.
Details of Ford’s Case and Sentencing
James Ford has been on death row for nearly 30 years. Court documents detail a grisly crime scene that shocked investigators and the community. Prosecutors successfully argued that the murders were premeditated and motivated by Ford’s intent to rob the couple.
The surviving toddler, now an adult, has largely stayed out of the public eye.
Florida’s Use of the Death Penalty
Florida is among the states that continue to actively use the death penalty. The execution of James Ford will bring attention to ongoing debates surrounding capital punishment in the state, including its application, frequency, and the appeals process for death row inmates.
