Chicago Man Charged With Murder in Navy Pier Shooting That Left Two Dead

Suspect Accused of Targeted Attack on Former Colleagues, Police Say

A 36-year-old Chicago man faces two first-degree murder charges following the fatal shooting of two workers at Navy Pier, one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations. Authorities announced the charges on Saturday, days after the tragic incident unfolded in an office area of the lakeside attraction.

Suspect Identified as Former Employee of Navy Pier

Raylon East, who had previously worked at Navy Pier, was apprehended Thursday after Chicago police released surveillance images showing the suspect accessing an office area near a loading dock just before the fatal shootings on Tuesday. According to police, East had been fired from his position at the popular site on October 14.

Navy Pier, known for its restaurants, shops, and iconic Ferris wheel, attracts millions of visitors each year, making this shooting especially shocking to the Chicago community.

Victims Identified as Navy Pier Employees

The victims, Lamont Johnson, 51, and Peter Jennings, 47, were identified as Navy Pier employees. Both men were shot inside an office area on the premises and were pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Following the shootings, East allegedly fled the scene, using public transportation to make his escape. Police were able to track down East using surveillance footage, leading to his arrest two days later.

Charges and Court Proceedings

East faces two counts of first-degree murder as well as one count of felon in possession or use of a weapon. Police did not provide details regarding the type of weapon involved, but the charge indicates East may have had prior legal restrictions on firearm possession.

East appeared in court Saturday for a detention hearing, but the Chicago Police Department has not confirmed information about his legal representation. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has yet to release details regarding East’s counsel.
