Woodbury Officer Attacked by Driver During Routine Stop
A Connecticut police officer was stabbed in the neck during a routine traffic stop on Thursday afternoon in Woodbury, a small town in northwestern Connecticut. Officer Tim Wright, a seasoned member of the local law enforcement community, was attacked by the driver of a vehicle he had pulled over, according to state police.
Details of the Incident
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Tyler Wilmot of Woodbury, exited his vehicle after being stopped and immediately engaged Officer Wright in a physical altercation. During the scuffle, Wilmot stabbed Wright with a knife, according to State Police Sgt. Luke Davis, who briefed the media on the incident.
“Officer Wright has been here in town for some time, and it is highly likely the individual was known to him,” Sgt. Davis said.
Officer Wright’s Condition and Response
Despite the severity of the assault, Officer Wright was able to activate his emergency alert button to call for backup. When another officer arrived on the scene, Wilmot attempted to flee on foot but was subdued with a taser and subsequently arrested.
Wright was rushed to a nearby hospital by a state police sergeant and was in stable condition by Thursday evening. Authorities expect him to make a full recovery.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Wilmot faces multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault, and several motor vehicle-related offenses. He is currently being held on a $3 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. It is unclear whether Wilmot has legal representation at this time.
Officer Wright’s Experience
Officer Wright, who has more than 35 years of law enforcement experience, is well-known within the Woodbury community. The town’s residents have expressed relief that he is expected to recover from his injuries, though the incident has shocked many in the small town of fewer than 10,000 people.
