Doctor Indicted on Rape Charges Amid Sexual Abuse Allegations

A Massachusetts grand jury has indicted Dr. Derrick Todd, a former rheumatologist, on charges of rape following allegations from over 200 former patients who accused him of sexual abuse during unnecessary medical procedures.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced the indictment on Thursday, stating that Todd faces two counts of rape related to alleged assaults on two women in December 2022 and June 2023. Investigations into additional claims of misconduct are ongoing.

Criminal Charges Filed Amid Civil Lawsuits

The indictment follows a series of lawsuits brought against Todd by patients who accused him of performing unwarranted pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, and other invasive procedures dating back to 2010.

During his arraignment on Friday, Todd pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail under strict conditions. He was ordered to avoid contact with victims, surrender his passport and medical licenses, and refrain from practicing medicine.

William Thompson, an attorney with Boston law firm Lubin & Meyer representing over 180 accusers, said the indictment underscores the severity of Todd’s alleged actions. “It validates the civil claims we’re pursuing on behalf of his former patients,” Thompson said.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital Under Scrutiny

Todd, previously employed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, was fired in July 2023 after the hospital received anonymous complaints and launched an internal investigation in April. The lawsuits allege that the hospital and other defendants were aware of the abuse and failed to intervene.

The hospital’s investigation led to Todd agreeing to stop practicing medicine nationwide under a voluntary agreement with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.

Accusers Speak Out

Victims’ ages range from teenagers to women in their 60s. Many have expressed relief at the criminal charges, viewing them as a critical step toward justice.

Paula Bliss, an attorney representing several victims, described the indictment as a “resounding moment of validation” for those who came forward. “It’s a step toward holding a so-called medical professional accountable for his deplorable conduct,” she said.

Ongoing Investigations Could Expand Case

As the criminal case progresses, additional charges may arise. Thompson suggested that Todd’s indictment signals a broader effort to hold him accountable for years of alleged misconduct.
