Driver Charged With DWI After New York Nail Salon Crash That Killed 4 and Injured

A tragic accident in Deer Park, New York, resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to nine others after an SUV crashed into a nail salon. The driver, Steven Schwally, of Dix Hills, has been arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated. The crash occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday when Schwally’s SUV plowed through the front window of Hawaii Nail & Spa.

Details of the Crash

According to Suffolk County Police, Schwally was speeding through the parking lot before crashing into the salon, which was open and conducting business at the time. Fire officials reported that Schwally was semiconscious when his vehicle came to a stop near the back of the store, which is located in a strip mall. Schwally was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Casualties and Injuries

The crash claimed the lives of three women and one man, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured included eight females and one male, among them a 12-year-old girl. At least two of the injured victims sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Victims and Community Impact

One of the deceased victims was Emilia Rennhack, 30, an off-duty New York City police officer. The police union confirmed her identity on social media, expressing deep sorrow. Rennhack, stationed at a precinct in Queens, had been a member of the NYPD since 2018. The New York Police Benevolent Association shared their condolences, stating, “Our hearts are breaking following the tragic loss of our 102 Pct. sister P.O. Emilia Rennhack in an off-duty incident yesterday. Please join us in praying for her family, friends and coworkers. Funeral arrangements to follow.”
