Driver Who Plowed Through July Fourth Crowd in NYC, Killing 3 and Injuring 8, Held Without Bail

A man accused of killing three people and injuring eight others after driving his pickup truck through a group celebrating the Fourth of July in Manhattan has been ordered held without bail. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday, just before the start of the Macy’s fireworks show and other displays around New York City.

Suspect and Charges

Daniel Hyden, 44, from Monmouth, New Jersey, was arraigned in Manhattan criminal court on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, assault, and manslaughter. Additional charges include driving while intoxicated and further counts of assault and manslaughter, as per the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

Legal Representation and Court Proceedings

Tim Pruitt, a lawyer with the Legal Aid Society representing Hyden, commented on the case: “This is a very tragic case, and we extend our sincere condolences to all those impacted. But Mr. Hyden is entitled to the presumption of innocence and a zealous defense, and at this preliminary stage in the case, we caution the public from making any rush to judgment.” Hyden’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.

Details of the Crash

According to New York City police, Hyden was speeding in his Ford F-150 pickup through Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He ran through an intersection and a stop sign before driving onto the sidewalk and into Corlears Hook Park. His vehicle was found on top of four of the victims.

Victims Identified

The three people who lost their lives in the incident have been identified as Lucille Pinkney, 59; her son, Hernan Pinkney, 38; and Ana Morel, 43. The injured, who were taken to hospitals, include an 11-year-old boy, an 18-year-old woman, and several individuals in their 30s.
