Ex-University of Kentucky Student Pleads Guilty to Assault in Racist Attack

Guilty Plea and Charges

A former University of Kentucky student, Sophia Rosing, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault, stemming from a racist attack on a Black student in 2022. Rosing, 23, appeared in court on Monday and entered guilty pleas to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and public intoxication, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Incident

The incident took place in a campus residence hall, where Rosing, who is white, attacked a Black student who was working at the time. The assault was recorded on video and widely circulated on social media, drawing significant attention and outrage. In the video, Rosing can be seen hitting the victim multiple times, kicking her in the stomach, and repeatedly using racial slurs.

Legal Proceedings and Apology

Following her arrest on the night of the assault, Rosing was expelled from the university and banned from campus by the university president. The guilty plea was reached after a mediation session between the parties involved.

“A lot of things got said, apologies were made and we worked it out,” said Rosing’s attorney, Fred Peters. “She has had a lot of time to think about what she has done, and she wrote a nice letter of apology.”

Potential Sentencing

Rosing faces up to 1 year in jail and 100 hours of community service. Her sentencing is scheduled for October 17.
