Florida Woman’s Brutal Murder Solved After 24 Years; Ex-Boyfriend Charged

Cold Case Breakthrough

Sherry Holtz was brutally murdered in 1999, and for over two decades, her case remained unsolved. Thanks to improved DNA testing technology, her former boyfriend, Gary Durrance, has been arrested and charged with her murder, the Sanford Police Department announced on July 19.

The Crime Scene

Holtz’s body was discovered on December 4, 1999, in a wooded area in Sanford, Florida, by a person collecting cans. The 50-year-old was found lying on her back on a concrete slab. Her neck had been cut, which was determined to be the primary cause of death. Additionally, she had suffered blunt force trauma to the head, strangulation, and severe sexual trauma.

Advances in DNA Technology

When the cold case was reopened in May 2023, new testing methods revealed that the blood on the knife blade belonged to Holtz, and additional DNA on the handle matched Durrance. This new evidence, combined with witness statements, led to an arrest warrant being issued on July 17.

Arrest and Charges

Durrance, now 73, was located and arrested on July 18 and charged with second-degree homicide. He is currently being held in Seminole County Jail. It is unclear if he has legal representation.

History of Domestic Violence

Durrance became a suspect early in the investigation due to a history of domestic violence incidents with Holtz, dating back to 1996. They had a fight on December 2, 1999, just days before her murder, and Durrance had kicked her out of their shared home.

Confession and Impact

Following his arrest, Durrance allegedly made comments to investigators admitting to his involvement in Holtz’s murder. “We are absolutely positive that the right man is behind bars tonight,” said Bianca Gillett, a public information officer for the Sanford Police Department.
