Former Virginia Delegate Matt Fariss Pleads Guilty to Gun and Drug Charges

Matt Fariss, a former Republican member of Virginia’s House of Delegates, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to felony charges of drug possession and firearm violations. The plea concludes a legal battle that further tarnishes the once-prominent political figure’s reputation.

Sentencing and Jail Time

Fariss, who represented Virginia as a Republican from 2012 until his unsuccessful independent bid in 2022, was sentenced to three years in prison, with all but 20 days suspended. Campbell Circuit Court Judge Dennis Lee Hupp credited Fariss for time already served, as the former delegate had spent 22 days in jail after his bond was revoked in late October.

Details of the Arrest

The charges stem from a March 23 traffic stop when sheriff’s deputies noticed a hunting rifle on Fariss’ seat. A subsequent search uncovered a bag of methamphetamine on his person, according to court records.

Legal Consequences

As part of his plea agreement, Fariss lost his right to own firearms and to hold public office in Virginia. The ruling is significant given his decade-long career in the state legislature.

Previous Legal Troubles

This is not Fariss’ first brush with the law. In March, he was acquitted of felony hit-and-run and malicious wounding charges after being accused of striking his ex-girlfriend with his SUV following an argument. While he avoided major convictions in that case, he was found guilty of improper driving and fined $500.

Fariss’ Fall From Grace

Fariss’ political career took a hit after he ran as an independent in 2022, failing to secure re-election. His recent guilty plea further distances him from the conservative platform he once represented in the Virginia General Assembly.
