Sentencing Pushed to April for Disgraced Former Congressman
George Santos, the former U.S. congressman who pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft charges, successfully requested a delay in his sentencing. U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert rescheduled the hearing to April 25, granting what she termed a “one-time courtesy” to support the ends of justice. Santos’ original sentencing date was February 7.
Santos Seeks Time to Continue Podcast
Santos, 36, requested additional time to continue producing his podcast, Pants on Fire, which he claims will help him pay off the $578,753 in restitution outlined in his plea agreement. His lawyers argued that the podcast’s income could boost the recovery of funds for his victims.
“This is a routine request and will allow Mr. Santos to both prepare for sentencing and meet his financial obligations,” his legal team stated.
Prosecutors Condemn the Delay
Federal prosecutors criticized the delay, accusing Santos of exploiting his notoriety for personal gain.
“Allowing Santos to delay sentencing to monetize his infamy sends a dangerous message to the public that crime pays,” prosecutors stated in their response.
Santos has agreed not to appeal any sentence of approximately eight years or less as part of his plea deal. His identity theft conviction alone carries a mandatory two-year prison term.
Political Rise and Fall
Elected in 2022 to represent parts of Long Island and Queens, Santos’ political career was short-lived. Reports emerged questioning the legitimacy of his fundraising efforts and exposing fabrications in his personal and professional biography.
In May 2023, Santos was charged with fabricating campaign fundraising figures and subsequently expelled from Congress seven months later.
Restitution and Reputation Repair
Santos’ plea deal includes full repayment of restitution and forfeiture of funds, which he claims the podcast will help achieve. Despite his tarnished reputation, Santos has leaned into his notoriety, positioning Pants on Fire as a platform to address scandals and his legal journey.
