Lawsuit Alleges Systemic Sexual Abuse at Now-Closed Michigan Detention Center

Over a Dozen Teens Claim Abuse by Staff at Wolverine Secure Treatment Center

A disturbing lawsuit filed in Michigan this week details shocking allegations of sexual abuse at a recently closed youth detention facility. The suit accuses the center’s operator of gross negligence in failing to protect vulnerable teenagers.

Multiple Victims Allege Abuse by Staff

According to the lawsuit, filed in Saginaw County on Tuesday, more than a dozen teenagers – 13 boys and one girl – were sexually abused by staff members while housed at the Wolverine Secure Treatment Center in Buena Vista Township. The lawsuit describes incidents occurring in private rooms, showers, and other locations within the facility.

Wolverine Secure Treatment Center: Troubled Past and Abrupt Closure

Located north of Detroit, the 100-bed center was operated by Wolverine Human Services. Court orders, the child welfare system, and even some families placed teenagers in the facility for rehabilitation.

While the lawsuit does not name specific staff members accused of abuse, some victims reportedly know their identities. Although no criminal charges have been filed, the lawsuit’s attorney indicated a willingness to cooperate with law enforcement investigations.

The lawsuit adds another layer to the troubled history of Wolverine Secure Treatment Center. State regulators initiated license revocation proceedings in 2021, citing concerns about staff using excessive force on teenagers. Wolverine Human Services contested the action but ultimately closed the center.

Lost Voices and Lingering Questions

The lawsuit suggests the number of victims may be even higher. Legal restrictions in Michigan prevent some potential victims from coming forward due to time limitations. Attorney David Stern, representing the plaintiffs, expressed his deep concern about the pervasive nature of the alleged abuse.

“Ultimately it comes from power,” Stern stated. He emphasized the vulnerability of the victims and the predatory nature of the alleged abuse.
