Man Arrested After Attempted Dog Cremation Sparks Colorado Wildfire

Attempted Cremation Leads to Major Fire

A Colorado man was arrested earlier this month after authorities linked him to a wildfire that started when he tried to cremate his dog. The fire, which broke out on August 1, scorched roughly 11 square miles (28 square kilometers) of land and caused an estimated $200,000 in damages, including the destruction of private property such as a cabin, according to investigators.

Dog’s Cremation Ceremony Gone Wrong

According to court records, the man was attempting to cremate his dog, Rocket, near his camper in western Colorado. Rocket had been euthanized after a court order following a fight with another dog. The man’s effort to honor his pet took a tragic turn when a spray can he tossed into the fire exploded, setting a nearby tree ablaze.

The wildfire that ensued quickly spread across the landscape, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement. The fire is now mostly contained, but the damage it caused is significant.

Man Charged with Arson and Trespassing

The suspect was charged with arson and trespassing after investigators connected him to the fire. Court documents revealed that the man was seen fleeing the scene on an ATV just minutes after the blaze was reported.

Authorities discovered the remains of Rocket at the site of the fire, with a large rock nearby engraved with the dates and the words “Rocket Dog, Rest in Peace Buddy.” A bone was also glued beneath the inscription, marking the somber attempt to bid farewell to his pet.

Damage and Fire Containment

The wildfire, which burned through private property and natural areas, resulted in extensive damage before being brought under control. The fire has since been largely contained, but the estimated costs of the destruction are around $200,000.

The Montrose Daily Press was the first to report the incident, providing details on how a simple cremation attempt turned into a dangerous and costly wildfire.

Further Legal Proceedings

The man’s case is ongoing, with authorities continuing to investigate the full extent of the damage caused. He now faces serious legal consequences, with arson and trespassing charges likely to result in significant penalties. As wildfires remain a pressing issue in the western U.S., this case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of uncontrolled fires, even those started with the best of intentions.
