Man Charged in Shootings Near Minneapolis Homeless Encampments

Suspect Identified in Fatal Shootings

Anthony Jones, 36, has been charged in connection with two shootings near homeless encampments in Minneapolis that left one man dead and another injured. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that Jones faces charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

The shootings occurred on Wednesday, the same day authorities believe Jones may be linked to a third killing currently under investigation. Police used surveillance footage to identify Jones as the man who fatally shot a victim at close range in south Minneapolis. Further investigation tied him to additional shootings in the same area, which officials described as “targeted.”

Details of the Charges

Jones was charged with one count of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting and one count of attempted second-degree murder for the other shooting that left a man injured. He is currently in custody, and no attorney has been listed for him as of Saturday.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are also looking into Jones’ possible involvement in a separate killing that took place on the same day as the two shootings. While the investigation is ongoing, officials believe the attacks were not directed at the broader homeless community in the area.

Hennepin County Attorney’s Response

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty condemned the violence, stating that the shooting spree was a “horrifying” event. While she emphasized that the attacks did not appear to target the homeless community as a whole, she stressed the need for safety.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe, housed or not, and our office will work to ensure that they do,” Moriarty said in a press release.
