Man Charged With First-Degree Murder in Fatal Shooting of Phoenix Police Officer

A man accused of fatally shooting a Phoenix police officer and injuring another has been indicted on multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder. Prosecutors announced the charges on Monday following a grand jury decision.

Charges and Trial Update

Saul Bal, 41, is facing a first-degree murder charge for the shooting death of Officer Zane Coolidge. In addition, Bal has been charged with attempt to commit first-degree murder, aggravated assault, first-degree burglary, and misconduct involving weapons. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell confirmed the indictment, though a trial date has yet to be scheduled.

Bal’s attorney, Alicia Dominguez, declined to comment on the case. Bal remains in custody on a $2 million cash-only bond.

The Incident

On September 3, 2023, officers Coolidge, 29, and Matthew Haney, 31, responded to a report of a man attempting to break into a car. When the officers arrived, the suspect, identified as Bal, fled the scene. During the ensuing chase, Bal stopped and opened fire on the officers.

Officer Coolidge sustained critical injuries and passed away three days later in the hospital. Officer Haney was saved from serious harm by his ballistic vest and is now recovering at home.

Bal’s Criminal History

Prosecutors revealed that Bal has a long criminal history and was on parole from the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry at the time of the shooting. Details of his previous convictions and parole violations were not immediately disclosed.

Remembering Officer Coolidge

Officer Zane Coolidge was a five-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. He leaves behind a wife and a 5-month-old daughter. A funeral service for Coolidge has been scheduled for Wednesday, with fellow officers, family, and community members expected to attend.
