Brutal Stabbing Leads to Grisly Discovery in NYC Waters
A Manhattan man has confessed to murdering his 65-year-old roommate and attempting to dispose of the body in the East River, prosecutors said. Christian Millet, 23, was arraigned on Thursday and is being held without bail on murder charges.
The investigation began on February 5, when officers from the NYPD harbor unit discovered a duffel bag floating in the East River containing body parts, including a severed torso. After forensic analysis, authorities identified the remains as those of Edwin Echevarria.
Police Uncover Evidence of a Gruesome Crime
Inside the apartment Millet and Echevarria shared, investigators found blood-soaked paper towels hidden in a closet. Authorities also recovered what they believe to be the murder weapon—a screwdriver with a sharp, cylindrical head.
Prosecutors revealed in court documents that Millet admitted to stabbing Echevarria, a man he reportedly considered a “grandfather figure.”
Motive Behind the Murder
During Millet’s arraignment, prosecutors cited a confession in which he described experiencing “an insane urge to kill” before fatally stabbing Echevarria. The New York Times reported that the two men had lived together for some time, but there was no immediate indication of prior conflicts leading up to the murder.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Millet remains in custody as the case moves forward. His assigned public defender, attorney Shari Leigh Vrod, has yet to issue a statement. Prosecutors are expected to present more evidence in the coming weeks as they build their case against him. The shocking nature of the crime has left neighbors and local residents unsettled, as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to the brutal killing.
