Shooter Accepts Plea Deal in 2022 Detroit Shooting Spree
A Detroit man who killed three people in a series of random shootings in August 2022 has pleaded guilty but mentally ill, accepting a deal that includes a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison. Dontae Smith, now 21, entered his plea on Wednesday in connection with the tragic events that unfolded on the city’s streets over two terrifying hours.
Smith admitted to charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and other offenses. He had originally faced first-degree murder charges, which carry a mandatory life sentence upon conviction.
Defense Attorney Cites Mental Illness
Smith’s attorney, Maria Mannarino, explained that her client was suffering from a severe mental health crisis during the shootings.
“He is stable now. He is competent,” Mannarino said. “But at the time, he was in the throes of a paranoid schizophrenic episode. He thought these people he encountered on the street were out to harm him. It’s a very sad and tragic situation for everyone involved.”
Under the plea agreement, Smith will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
Details of the 2022 Shooting Spree
The shootings occurred on a Sunday morning, shaking Detroit residents. Victims were attacked while waiting at a bus stop and even in the doorway of a church.
In total, two women and one man were killed, while a fourth person and a dog were injured. The attacks unfolded over approximately two hours, but no 911 calls were made until the second victim was discovered.
Smith’s rampage ended when an armed bystander intervened, firing at him during the final attack. Smith fled the scene, witnesses reported.
