Driving on a Suspended License Lands Man Back in Jail
A Michigan man who gained internet fame for attending a virtual court hearing on a driving offense while driving himself has been arrested again for the same violation. This time, the arrest stems from a warrant issued years ago in a different jurisdiction.
Fresh Warrant for Past Offense
Corey Harris, the man at the center of the viral video, appeared in a Washtenaw County court for a follow-up hearing related to a suspended license charge. During the hearing, Judge J. Cedric Simpson revealed a 2015 warrant for Harris’ arrest in Allen Park, a Detroit suburb, for the same offense. Court officers promptly took Harris into custody.
Viral Moment Revisited
Harris became an internet sensation in May 2024 after a video of his initial court appearance surfaced. The video showed Harris attending the virtual hearing via video call, concerning a charge of driving with a suspended license. However, the most shocking detail was Harris being visibly behind the wheel during the call. When questioned by Judge Simpson, Harris casually mentioned he was pulling into his doctor’s office.
Judge Revokes Bond, Clarifies License Status
Judge Simpson, understandably stunned by the situation, revoked Harris’ bond and ordered him to surrender himself that same day. Harris was held for two days before his release. During Wednesday’s hearing, Judge Simpson addressed news reports suggesting the initial charge stemmed from a clerical error or government incompetence. He firmly clarified that Harris, in fact, “never had a license—ever.” Michigan’s Secretary of State confirmed the judge’s statement.
Defense Attorney Aims for Resolution
Harris’ defense attorney, Dionne Webster-Cox, expressed her intention to resolve both court cases and ultimately allow Harris to obtain a valid driver’s license. She acknowledged, “I can’t do anything about the past… At the end of the day, handle your business.”
