A Georgia National Guard soldier appeared in federal court on Monday after being charged with murder in a fatal shooting that occurred over the weekend at Fort Eisenhower, a U.S. Army base near Augusta, Georgia. The incident led to a two-hour lockdown on the base before officials reassured the public that the situation was contained.
The Fatal Shooting and Lockdown
The suspect, 25-year-old Natravien Landry, faces federal charges after allegedly confronting and fatally shooting a man at a home on the military base Saturday morning. According to an affidavit filed by an Army investigator, Landry was on duty at the time but took a break to visit the home of a former girlfriend. The affidavit states that Landry confronted another man at the house and shot him. The victim’s name has not been publicly released and was only identified by initials in court documents.
Following the shooting, Fort Eisenhower officials ordered a lockdown as a precaution. The base, which houses the U.S. Army Cyber Command, remained closed for two hours while authorities investigated the scene. Officials later described the shooting as an “isolated incident” and confirmed a suspect had been apprehended.
Arrest and Confession
Landry fled the military base after the shooting and was arrested hours later by sheriff’s deputies in Meriwether County, approximately 180 miles from Fort Eisenhower. Court records indicate that Landry discarded a 9mm handgun from the window of his car before being pulled over. During questioning, Landry admitted to the shooting, according to the Army investigator’s report.
Legal Representation and Ongoing Investigation
Fort Eisenhower officials have not publicly commented on the victim or specific details surrounding the confrontation. Landry’s attorney, David Stewart, has not responded to requests for comment regarding the case.
Landry remains in federal custody as the investigation continues. Federal authorities have yet to announce the next court date in the case.
Significance of Fort Eisenhower
Fort Eisenhower, formerly known as Fort Gordon, is home to thousands of soldiers and serves as a critical center for U.S. Army Cyber Command operations. While officials emphasized the isolated nature of the incident, the shooting has drawn attention to safety on military bases.
