NJ Man Charged with Manslaughter in Speed-Demon Crash That Killed Wife

High-Speed Crash Details

Two drivers in New Jersey are accused of causing a deadly multi-vehicle crash by driving at excessive speeds, with one driver now facing charges in the death of his own wife. Benjamin Futerman, 32, and Wilson Familia, 22, were allegedly exceeding 100 mph when they crashed on Route 9 near Ferry Road in Old Bridge shortly after 1 a.m. on June 2, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Victim and Charges

Kristina Godich, 31, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of Futerman’s BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene. Prosecutors did not speculate whether the two men were drag racing.

Futerman, from Manalapan, and Familia, from Old Bridge, were reported to have driven recklessly and at high speeds before colliding with other vehicles. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, stated prosecutor spokesperson Brynn Krause.

Medical Treatment and Arrests

Futerman was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in critical condition but was released days later. He surrendered to authorities on Wednesday. Familia and his three passengers were also transported to the same hospital. Familia surrendered to the Old Bridge Police Department on Monday.

Legal Proceedings

Futerman has been charged with one count of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and one count of second-degree vehicular homicide in the death of his wife. Familia faces charges of second-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree assault by auto, and two counts of third-degree aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by his passengers.

Background of Victim

Kristina Godich was a Rutgers graduate who worked in finance and credit risk management for Wells Fargo. Born in Uzbekistan, she was brought to the US as an infant. Her obituary highlighted her kindness, love of family, and zest for life.

Release and Monitoring

Both Futerman and Familia were released this week on pre-trial monitoring, authorities confirmed.
