Bystander Victim in Campus Altercation
Two individuals, Destry Jones (20) and Damien Hinson (18), both residents of Dover, Delaware, have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on the campus of Delaware State University. Authorities have confirmed that neither suspect is a student at the university.
Shooting Erupts During Off-Campus Altercation
According to Dover police, the shooting claimed the life of 18-year-old Camay Mitchell De Silva of Wilmington. The incident occurred on April 21st outside a residence hall. Investigators believe De Silva was not the intended target of the gunfire.
Swift Apprehension of Suspects
Dover police, who collaborate with campus police on night and weekend patrols, were in the vicinity when the gunshots erupted around 1:40 am. Campus police also received reports of gunfire near a dormitory at approximately the same time.
A subsequent call alerted authorities to a female victim lying on the ground outside another dormitory building. Sadly, upon arrival, officers discovered De Silva suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators emphasized that De Silva was not involved in the altercation that preceded the shooting.
Investigation Leads to Arrests and Charges
The investigation revealed that Jones and Hinson were part of a group involved in a fight with two other males prior to the shooting. Both suspects are facing attempted murder charges in connection with these individuals.
Jones was apprehended on Thursday at a Brooklyn, New York apartment. Hinson was arrested later that same day in the parking lot of a Dover shopping center. Jones awaits extradition to Delaware, where he faces charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, possession of a firearm during a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Hinson is currently being held in a Delaware prison on a $3 million cash bond for the same charges.
