A North Carolina man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan, who was responding to a report of an armed individual at a Food Lion supermarket.
Suspect Arrested Following Pursuit
Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, was charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody without bond, according to Greensboro Police. He also faces additional charges related to a vehicle pursuit that ended in Duplin County, roughly 150 miles southeast of Greensboro.
Police confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in connection with the incident. Online court records do not list an attorney for McMillian.

Officer Horan was responding to a midday report of a man with a gun at the Food Lion store when he was fatally shot. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances of the shooting. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation.
The store remains closed as investigators continue their work. Food Lion released a statement expressing condolences and pledging support to affected employees.
Officer Horan’s Legacy
Officer Michael Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and became a sworn officer the following year. He served in the patrol bureau and was also a U.S. Coast Guard member since 2000.
Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris described Horan as an “excellent officer” with an “outstanding reputation” within the department and the community.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed his sympathy on X, formerly Twitter, extending condolences to Horan’s family and colleagues. “The fallen officer was courageously doing his duty protecting Greensboro when he became the victim of a senseless act of violence,” Cooper wrote.
