NYC Aesthetician Charged With Injecting Counterfeit Botox, Causing Severe Illnesses

Federal authorities have charged a New York City aesthetician with injecting counterfeit Botox into clients at a Manhattan medical spa, resulting in severe and life-threatening health complications for some customers.

Joey Grant Luther, 54, who operated the spa in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, is accused of wire fraud, smuggling, and distributing misbranded and counterfeit drugs. Authorities allege that Luther knowingly administered fake Botox purchased from countries in Asia, including China, between 2021 and July 2023.

Severe Health Repercussions for Clients

According to court documents, multiple clients reported severe symptoms after receiving the counterfeit injections. One patient was diagnosed with botulism in March 2023, following a February treatment at Luther’s spa. The woman experienced double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and heart palpitations. She also temporarily lost the ability to lift her arms.

Despite knowing about the adverse effects, Luther allegedly dismissed client concerns, falsely claiming the counterfeit Botox was legitimate and assuring them that side effects were temporary.

Federal Investigation and Charges

The investigation revealed that Luther, who lacked the proper licensing to administer Botox, continued his illegal activities even after learning about the harm his products caused. During a raid on his business in March 2023, investigators uncovered evidence of at least 700 Botox-related appointments.

Luther has been charged with wire fraud, smuggling counterfeit drugs, and other related offenses. He was released on a $100,000 bail. His attorney has not issued a statement regarding the charges.

U.S. Attorney’s Statement on the Case

U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon condemned Luther’s actions, emphasizing the risk he posed to his clients.

“Luther’s disregard for the health of his clients put all of his victims in harm’s way and, in some cases, caused life-threatening injuries,” Sassoon said in a statement.
