NYC Parents Charged in Starvation Death of 4-Year-Old Boy

Prosecutors Allege Extreme Abuse and Isolation in Tragic Harlem Case

A New York City couple has been indicted on charges of murder, manslaughter, and child endangerment in connection with the death of their 4-year-old son, Jah’Meik Modlin, who authorities say suffered from prolonged starvation and neglect in a Harlem apartment. The case has stunned the community, with prosecutors describing it as a deeply troubling example of parental abuse and isolation.

Details of the Indictment

The parents, Nytavia Ragsdale, 26, and Laron Modlin, 24, were accused of depriving their son and his siblings of food while keeping the apartment stocked for their own use. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the stepped-up charges on Wednesday, describing the alleged actions as “extreme physical neglect and persistent abuse with depraved indifference for [Jah’Meik’s] life.”

Ragsdale, who was initially charged with second-degree manslaughter, pleaded not guilty to the new charges and is being held without bail. Modlin’s arraignment is scheduled for next week.

Shocking Allegations of Starvation and Isolation

According to prosecutors, the couple kept their kitchen stocked with fresh food but prevented the children from accessing it. The refrigerator was reportedly turned to face a wall, and cabinets were zip-tied shut. Authorities allege that the couple actively hid the children from extended family and the outside world, including withholding medical care and schooling.

“The death of Jah’Meik Modlin, an innocent four-year-old child, is a tragedy that has scarred this city,” Bragg said. “That he died a slow and painful death, starving alongside his older siblings, somehow isolated in the heart of Harlem, is a stain on our collective conscience.”

Grim Conditions in the Home

When authorities discovered Jah’Meik unconscious on October 13, he weighed only 19 pounds, far below the healthy weight range for his age. According to the District Attorney’s Office, the child had almost no body fat, highlighting the extent of his malnutrition. His siblings, aged 5, 6, and 7, were also severely malnourished and remain in the hospital undergoing treatment for starvation-related conditions.

The children’s living quarters reportedly were in appalling conditions, with floors covered in feces and no evidence of adequate living care.

Next Steps in the Legal Process

With Modlin’s arraignment set for next week, the District Attorney’s office indicated that it would continue to investigate the couple’s alleged actions and ensure justice for Jah’Meik and his siblings. In the meantime, authorities have said the children will remain under medical care and are being closely monitored as they begin the long journey toward recovery.

The public and officials alike are mourning the loss of Jah’Meik Modlin, whose story has shed light on the urgent need for enhanced child protection measures in New York.
