Incident Disrupts Subway Service as Police Search for Suspect
A man accused of shooting another man on a busy Upper West Side street in Manhattan before fleeing into the New York City subway system was arrested Friday, according to the New York City Police Department. The suspect, Eduardo Diaz, 25, is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault, following the Thursday morning incident that led to substantial subway delays.
Suspect Fled Into Subway System, Prompting Commuter Chaos
The shooting occurred around 9 a.m. Thursday, disrupting the city’s busy morning commute. Authorities say Diaz allegedly shot a 47-year-old man in the leg and shoulder. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, is hospitalized in stable condition. Following the shooting, Diaz reportedly entered the 72nd Street subway station, leading police to take extensive measures to contain him.
To ensure commuter safety, police temporarily shut down power at the 72nd Street station and ordered bystanders to lie on the floor and shelter in place. Trains were halted, causing significant delays as officers conducted a station-wide search for Diaz, who had already escaped.
Arrest and Pending Charges
Diaz was taken into custody Friday morning at his Queens residence. He faces charges including attempted murder, assault, and other related counts. As of Friday, no arraignment date has been set, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office reported that information regarding Diaz’s legal representation would be available only after his court appearance.
Victim’s Condition and Investigation
Police have not provided details regarding a possible connection between Diaz and the victim or any potential motive. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
