Savannah, GA – Savannah police announced the arrest of a suspect in Wednesday in connection with a weekend shooting that injured 11 people in Ellis Square, a popular downtown nightlife district.

William Mitchell Faces Aggravated Assault Charges

20-year-old William Anthony Mitchell was charged with four counts of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm during a crime, according to a statement released by Savannah police. Weekend Shooting Left No Fatalities

Thankfully, no lives were lost in the shooting that erupted late Saturday night. Police reported that 10 people were struck by gunfire, while another individual sustained injuries from shattered car window glass. Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther previously stated that an argument between two women escalated into an exchange of gunfire involving multiple shooters.

Mitchell’s Prior Legal Troubles

It was revealed that Mitchell was already facing unrelated felony charges for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute at the time of his arrest. Chatham County State Court records show he was released on bond in April.

Separate Gun Law Controversy in Savannah

The Savannah Police Department announcement comes amidst an ongoing controversy surrounding a recently passed city ordinance. The ordinance, supported by Mayor Johnson, a Democrat and former police officer, aims to promote responsible gun ownership by making it illegal to leave firearms in unlocked vehicles.

State Attorney General Challenges Ordinance

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican, has challenged the legality of the ordinance. He argues that it contradicts a state law prohibiting local governments from regulating gun ownership or carry methods.
