Damien McDaniel, a 22-year-old Alabama man, was charged with 11 homicides, including two separate mass shootings in Birmingham last year. On Wednesday, McDaniel pleaded not guilty in state court. The charges he faces account for over 7% of the city’s record-high 151 homicides in 2024.
Mass Shootings Linked to July and September Nightclub Incidents
Eight of the 11 capital murder charges stem from two mass shootings that occurred outside Birmingham nightclubs. The first incident took place in July, when four people were killed and 10 others were injured outside a nightclub. In connection with this shooting, 27-year-old Hatarius Woods also faces capital murder charges. The second mass shooting occurred in September, leaving four dead and 17 others injured. Birmingham police indicated there were “multiple shooters” involved in the September shooting, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. These two shootings are part of three total mass shootings that Birmingham experienced in 2024.
Separate Fatal Shootings Add to Charges
In addition to the two mass shootings, McDaniel faces charges related to three separate fatal shootings that occurred on different days in August and September. These killings, combined with the mass shootings, bring the total number of alleged homicides to 11.
Defense Asserts Lack of Evidence
McDaniel’s defense attorney, John Robbins, stated that he has not seen any evidence against his client. Robbins emphasized that even if evidence existed, he would be restricted from discussing it publicly due to the ongoing nature of the case. “We’re assembling a strong defense team to ensure the process is fair and that McDaniel’s rights are protected,” Robbins said.
Ongoing Investigations
The investigation into the September mass shooting remains active, with authorities continuing to explore the involvement of multiple shooters. Further charges may be considered as new details emerge. McDaniel remains in custody as the case proceeds through the legal system.
