Arkansas State Police have launched an investigation into the death of Clara Braxton, 45, from Independence County, Arkansas, whose body was discovered after an officer-involved shooting in Festus, Missouri, on Sunday. The investigation is ongoing, with Missouri authorities seeking assistance from Arkansas State Police to uncover the details surrounding Braxton’s death.
Officer-Involved Shooting in Festus, Missouri
The situation unfolded when Festus Police responded to reports of an active shooter at a restaurant in the St. Louis suburb. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Jarrett W. Cousins from Bradford, Arkansas, fled the scene in a Dodge Ram truck. Officers from Festus and nearby Crystal City attempted to stop Cousins’ vehicle, but it struck a concrete median, eventually halting in front of a shopping center.
Cousins, wearing body armor and armed with multiple firearms, exited the vehicle and opened fire on officers. In response, police returned fire, striking Cousins. He was transported to a local hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition. None of the officers were injured during the exchange.
Discovery of Clara Braxton’s Body
As officers secured the scene, they discovered the body of Clara Braxton in the front passenger seat of Cousins’ truck. The remains were sent to the Missouri Crime Lab for further examination to determine the cause of death.
Arrest and Charges Against Cousins
Jarrett Cousins was arrested at the scene and faces serious charges, including first-degree assault or attempt to inflict serious physical injury and armed criminal action. He is currently being held without bond.

The investigation into Braxton’s death is being handled by Arkansas State Police. Once the investigation is complete, all findings will be handed over to the prosecutor in Independence County to determine whether any charges will be filed in connection with her death.
